So many of my Twitter friends today heard about my horrible story at lunch… this is as true as it gets… just listen to what I witnessed today at a gas station here in Dallas, TX and the events that occurred afterward. What would you do?

I have been in a similar situation and I did the very same thing. No one “bitched” me out. In fact, 3 other people were on their cell phones calling it in too. Perhaps the attitude towards police officers is different where I live. I live in British Columbia in Canada.

Could be… I really think the distaste that some “groups” have for the police is what was in effect here… I was completely out of my element and more sick to my stomach that 2 people got mad that I called the cops vs getting mad at the mother you know what…

you absolutely did the right thing!!!. Call the police.
( and i’m a big strong guy. here’s why.
Juan plays hero by breaking up the fight). makes himself look good.
When that guy( who punched his wife )goes home, he will make his wife pay for his bad day with Juan.
Call the police. You will rarely get a satisfying outcome. But you might put his ass in prison sometime down the line.
Great job today.

I too have had this experience, but mine was in Toronto. I also called 911 and told the guy that I did. Fortunately for his wife, he decided to try to attack me. Fortunately for me, I studied martial arts for 9 years. He tried to hit me and that was it. I went to court for her and he was incarcerated for 3 years. The best part of the story is that is that he was “taken” care of in jail, so his wife did not need to worry about him later.
Oh and by the way, Juan is a douchebag! Just sayin’!
Go Jeff. I want to be on team jeff!

Juan is a jerk. You did the absolute right thing. First, you really don’t know if it is his wife or not or what the situation is. Certainly he has no right to hit his wife and I don’t understand people who think that’s a private issue. As for kicking his ass, that might make you feel better (providing you win the fight, lo) but it would probably make it even worse for his wife once they’re alone.
You rock! You did the right thing!

You did the right thing…no one has the right to punch anyone else…wife or not!!! Abuse/violence is not a private thing regardless of who it is between…
As for Juan…he was a complete idiot!
Cheers

You did the right thing, no question. I would have been so scared in your position - you didn’t do anything wrong, in fact, you were pretty darn brave calling the police!
(I’m also 5′6″, so I know exactly where you’re coming from!)

Of course you did exactly the right thing, Jeff. You did what any thinking person would do, or would later wish they had done, if they didn’t respond in the moment. And you fended off his would-be attack on you in exactly the right way, too, not physically, but by being an extension of law and civilized society in a moment when it was needed.
