Top 5 Magazine Subscriptions

Top 5 Magazines - Jeff McCord\'s Blog

Summer time reminds me of beaches, oceans, pools, BBQs and magazines.  Magazines?  Yes, magazines.  For some reason, I’ve always associated summer time with reading one of my most favorite mags while laying out at the pool.  Or if I’m blessed to be able to go to the beach during a summer vacation, I always take my favorite mags with me.  Some people read books… I read People.

So that got me thinking.  What are my favorite magazines?  I’m always interested in knowing what magazines are out there. I read a lot of my news and celebrity gossip online these days, but there’s still something about flipping through pages that gets my brain turned on!  I know, it’s odd.

Here are my top five favorite magazines:

(1) People – People Magazine has to be the best celebrity magazine there is. It’s weekly (which means you don’t have to wait 30 days to get your new one) and People is generally known to be a reliable source in regards to news and “gossip”.  I can’t stand magazines that sell nothing but trash (Star, Inquirer) and People is definitely in a class of its own.

(2) Macworld – I’m a geek, what can I say? Ever since I bought my Macbook on 12/31/07, I’ve been blessed with a free one year subscription of Macworld.  It’s the best tech magazine I know.  Every month there are new tips, tricks and informative articles on anything related to my favorite tech producer, Apple.

(3) Newsweek – I like to read about politics, our economy, national issues and controversy. What other magazine encompasses all of these into one, wonderfully written monthly magazine? That would be Newsweek. Newsweek covers everything including Entertainment, Technology, News and Health topics.

(4) The Advocate – Now, I get that you may not like this magazine because you’re not a “mo”.  But I love it.  The Advocate is one of the only gay magazines that covers news, politics, opinions/editorials and local issues pertaining to the gay community.  It’s very informative and also entertaining (and it’s totally G-rated, ps).

(5) Pottery Barn – Now who would I be if I didn’t include a magazine about home decor and fashion? I love my Pottern Barn subscription.  I always enjoy the moxiest couches, candles, bathroom set ups and coffee tables. This one is a toss up, though.  West Elm has a great magazine subscription too. (disclaimer: James works at West Elm so we’re a lil’ biased)

So my favorite readers, what’s your favorite magazine?  Give me a comment below and tell me why it’s your favorite!

These are the top 5 MONTHLY mags I read…Men’s Health, Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, Wired, Empire, EGM listed in order. I love getting my reading content digitally, but there is something about reading a magazine over a screen.

I am not sure that I have five monthly magazines that I read. I subscribe to DWELL and This Old House. I read Men’s Health almost monthly since I pick it up at the airport. I can’t think of another that I read regularly.

Since I now own a house with a pool, I can’t say that I read at all when I am lounging. Usually, I am listening to Incognito (great band from the UK) or some smooth jazz, Bob Marley.

Hmm, your next blog should be your top 5 summer CDs or songs.

I wouldn’t subscribe to MacWorld. By the time any Mac mag has had the chance to go to print, the news is well out of date and most of the tips and gems I find from other sources. RSS FTW!
I couldn’t give a crap about People. Any even mildly interesting celebrity news (and there’s not much) I can get from the web as well. If I were going to read a celeb mag, it would be Hola. It’s in Spanish (works for me since I can read most of it and it’s good review for me) but they don’t Photoshop their photos. Eye-opening entertainment there.
Newsweek is a good choice I think. Any broad ranging news mag would fit here such as USN&WR.
I’m not sure what you’d get from the print version that wouldn’t be available in RSS from The Advocate.
I much prefer the IKEA catalog to Pottery Barn mag. It’s free and fits my style more. :)

I think I just have an aversion to print mags now. For the most part, they’re just clutter. The only way I would consider subscribing is if it weren’t available in some sort of digital version. Even most libraries are doing away with their hardcopy subscriptions in favor of electronic ones. I think that devices like the Kindle could provide some balance, but by and large, paper for periodicals is done.

    1 – Inc. – Lastest & Greatest
2 – Fast Company – Love it for company profiles.
3 – MacWorld – Mac Addict, Mac beats PC.
4 – Cottage Living – I am a girl, I love antiques and country cottage style.
    5 – InStyle – Bags & Shoes of course

Jamie – I partly disagree. Print Magazines are not clutter, people look forward to them. They’ve replace reading the Sunday paper – for me at least. Sunday I run, I go to the farmer’s market and come home and make fresh breakfast, tea and then I read what I got that week. Even if it is for pictures. I am a highly digital, online girl but some things you have to touch and see – magazines are one of them. While digital delivery of MacWorld and those magazines are great, things like the Pottery Barn & West Elm catalog (kudos Jeff, those are Sunday reading too – Try Brocade Home too) you have to look at in print, then you go and buy in person. Also, there are articles in print you can’t get online :)

    Callie,
Don’t forget the Room and Board catalog. It just came today.
