Snackr: Displaying Feeds On Your Desktop

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

SnackrI’m all about RSS Feeds. They’re convenient, they’re simple and they’re time-saving and therefore life-saving. If you don’t know what RSS is, you really need to learn about it as I promise you it will change the way you view the web.

Here’s McCord’s definition: instead of visiting a website in a browser to see the latest and greatest articles, blog posts, news, pictures/videos, all you need to do is add the website’s RSS feed into a RSS reader and you get “snippets” of new content on the site. If you’re interested in reading more, you click on the link and the RSS reader brings you to the website. If the headline doesn’t interest you, you move on and therefore don’t have to visit the site. It’s a great way to view 30 of your favorite sites in less than 10 minutes. Done and done.

Now, on to Snackr. Snackr is a RSS ticker that scrolls your RSS feeds in random order on your desktop in a beautiful, Adobe-Air display. Snackr can work on Mac OS X, Windows and Linux so it’s available (for free) to everyone. You must have Adobe Air installed in order to use Snackr, so click here if you haven’t downloaded Adobe Air yet. Once you’ve downloaded Snackr, you can customize which feeds to add, where you want the scroll bar displayed and how fast you want the ticker to move. It’s that easy.

Below is a quick video showing you my Snackr on my desktop… it’ll give you a great idea of how it works. You can download Snackr here.

Jott This: Writing My Blog with My Voice!

Jott

One of my goals is creating this blog is to discuss the moxiest, newest technology out there. Although Jott has been around for a little while, the services that Jott has recently added now have my attention. Once you’ve created a free account with Jott, all you have to do is call a toll-free number and speak whatever it is you wish to say clearly. You then have the option for Jott to transcribe what you say and send it to any of your contacts on email or now even Twitter.

They also just added cross functionality with WordPress, the software I use for my blog. I can literally call the Jott toll-free number next time there’s breaking news and within seconds, Jott will transcribe my voicemail into a new blog post for you to read. Moxie indeed!

Here’s an example of a call I just made to Jott:

“Hey guys I am using jott to write my new blog posts and I just wanted to say hello, this is very moxie.” Listen to Jeff’s Voicemail Here

A Moxie Way to Surf the Web

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Cali Lewis, from Geekbrief.tv, just informed all of us viewers about an awesome new technology that, to me, is so moxie I couldn’t help but write about it as well! Publicis and Hal Riney have a new way to surf their site… WITH THE MOTION OF YOUR HANDS! No more touching the keys on your keypad. No more using the mouse to navigate. As long as you have a webcam, you can use the “Air Hands” technology to navigate!

Check out the demo I made while on the site… it’s fantastic and quite moxie! ;)

You will see, at first, the intro to the website where you do a test to make sure your webcam is monitoring your hand signals. Then you’ll see the actual site and me navigating my way (left, right, and top) through it.

Please DIGG this if you think it’s interesting/cool…

A Website Worth Loving

Lifehacker.png

I’ve blogged before which podcasts and websites I adore and I’ve been remiss to let my readers know of one in particular. Lifehacker.com is phenomenal. They have some of the best articles any computer lover (Windows or Apple) would read on a daily basis. I’ve also found several useful tips on life’s daily challenges on this website. It’s not just for us computer geeks. And lets face it, friends, in this day and age, your RSS-Reader can blow up with some pretty useless material.

Speaking of awesome websites, a lot of my coworkers and friends ask me how I know so much material in regards to technology and every day news. I have to give up my secret, which really is no secret. Any one of you who love scanning the internet sites for the latest headlines must use a RSS reader. And for those who aren’t familiar with what RSS means click here. I would suggest the RSS reader NetNewsWire for those of you who have Macs and Google’s RSS-Reader (simply called Google Reader) is fantastic and easy to use for those Windows users.
