3D Channels – Coming Soon To A House Near You?

3DTV 3D Channels Coming Soon To A House Near You?

We’ve talked a lot about 2010’s technology and gadgets and what to expect this year on the Moxie Mo Show. One topic that is all the buzz is 3D – not the typical red/blue glasses you wear in a big movie theater, but 3D HDTVs and networks that will soon carry 3D television.

I think we can all agree that 2010 is surprising that 3D technology could actually be in people’s homes… quite frankly, I thought it’d take another 10 years to get the experience something worthwhile AND something inexpensive. But according to CES 2010, it looks like it may be coming sooner than you thought.

The Discovery Channel, one of my most favorite networks (Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, Discovery Health, etc) has teamed with Sony and Imax to bring 3D technology and programming to people’s homes in 2011. “So far, the 3D network doesn’t have a name. But when it launches, the companies said it will feature “content from genres that are most appealing in 3D, including natural history, space, exploration, adventure, engineering, science and technology, motion pictures and children’s programming from Discovery, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Imax, and other third-party providers,” quotes Cnet.com.

But more than science, sports fan will love this: ESPN, according to a USA Today report, is creating an ESPN 3D Channel that will deliver more than 85 live sporting events in 3D!

So what does one need to prepare for this new and awesome technology? Obviously, your new HDTV you got for Christmas will not suffice – but the newest and yet-to-come HDTVs will be 3D-ready and yes, glasses will be required. The question remains though, do you think 3D will be a hit (if done right) even with having to wear 3D glasses or will it just be another bust, like the 80s 3D flicks?

Canon HV30: One Moxie HD Cam

Canon HV30

As many of you know, I am the host and producer of the Moxie Mo Show. This podcast is a show all about technology and what I deem as moxie in technology. In the ever competing world of podcasts, one thing you need is a good camera and I believe I found one in the Canon HV30.

Testfreaks.com rates the camera (user reviews, which I like to gauge as the best) as an 7.3 out of 10. We all know Canon makes beautiful and wonderful HD cameras. The problem I’ve had for quite some time is the price. I do the Moxie Mo Show as a hobby and although just recently we got signed by Mevio, my show isn’t my bread and butter. I couldn’t afford a $1200 camera like some podcasts out there which is why I did the show with my Flip Mino HD for a few months. Now, I’m proud to say I was able to get a great deal with the Canon HV30 and it’s definitely worth the $650.

I’m not a technical expert so I am not going to write about every single spec of the Canon HV30 (thus why you should go to Testfreaks.com and you can read everything you want about it), but I definitely encourage you to buy a Canon HV30 for ANY HD recordings.

This HD camera shoots gorgeous 1080 HD footage and uses Mini-DV tapes (which experts all say makes the HD look so much better) as well as gives you the ability to use an external microphone with it as well. It’s perfect for podcasting and perfect for a “family HD camera.” I definitely give it 5 moxies.

YouTube Goes HD!

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Well it’s been an interesting week for technology news and Google’s YouTube definitely topped the cake. YouTube, the world’s largest video sharing site, has officially gone HD.

According to Techcrunch, “After teasing us for a year with the option to watch “higher quality” videos that weren’t quite high-def, it appears that YouTube is making the switch to HD, at least for some videos that have been uploaded in that quality. Earlier this month, there were reports of YouTube testing this feature, but this morning it seems to be more widespread. (This comes after YouTube adopted a widescreen format for all of its videos last week).”

Bravo to YouTube for doing this. Some bloggers (just recently today) have even gone so far to say the quality of the 720p videos on YouTube look better than Vimeo’s HD service. Wow.

This just goes to show that Santa needs to bring me my new Flip Mino HD now!

minohd Flip Announces The Mino HD!

In a surprising announcement late last night, The New York Times announced that the Flip Video Camera, which has taken the digital camcorder industry by storm, is coming out with a new Flip Mino HD. The camcorder is said to be 3.3 oz and according to the NY Times, the Flip has beautiful high-definition and amazingly performs well!

The Flip Mino HD will cost $230 which is one of the cheapest HD camcorders out there. As most know, a good HD video cam is easily $700 to $1,000 these days. If the Flip Mino HD truly creates great high definition video, this will revolutionize the HD industry.

HD Camcorder

So if you’ve been watching the Moxie Mo Show, you know that I’ve been wanting to purchase a HD video recorder but I don’t want to spend the money that most of them cost. I’ve decided to take this discussion to the “blogwaves” and ask you, the educated viewers, on which HD camcorder should I purchase?

I’m wanting to spend no more than $300 to $400 and I realize this may present a bit of a challenge, but surely I can get a nice quality HD camcorder for that amount? Surely.

Cali Lewis, the host of Geekbrief, suggested I look into the Canon HV30 which does look like a great choice however it’s pricey.

Can any of you suggest any HD camcorders I should look into? The main purpose would be to film my podcast as well as my daily crazy, goofy shows which I’ve been currently filming with my Flip Ultra. I love my Flip. Here again was a great buying choice for me. It didn’t cost much at all, it’s super easy to use and the quality of the video isn’t bad at all for SD.

I truly appreciate your suggestions! They will be taken with great consideration.

Mars can be really moxie…

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

So as many of you who know me, you know that I have two big passions in my life right now. I just turned 31 and maybe thats partially the reason that I have 2 passions. I’m finally growing up and realizing that a lot of us may have passions so why not share mine to you and vice versa?  My two passions currently are anything to do with HD TV and HD podcasts (they’re just too cool looking on our new plasma TV) and  my other passion (as I’ve written in other posts on here) has been  looking into myself and seeking change (radical and not-so-radical) so that I can be the best Jeff McCord that I can be.

So, for passion one, I wanted to share with you this awesome video.  It’s absolutely amazing what the JPL and NASA have found to be scientifically fact in regards to our universe.  I remember in third grade we thought Mars was nothing more than a science fiction’ish planet that was next to ours.  Who knew that life could have honestly existed on this planet (and maybe still does?)

Check this video out – I captured it from JPL’s HD Podcast:
