Earth Day 2008: A Moxie Series (pt 4 finale)

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Today has been a great day for me… I’ve been educated on conserving so many things to help our Earth, I’ve donated money to Nature.org to plant trees in my family and friend’s names and I’ve come across this awesome video, thanks to Will Pate’s blog.  Discovery Channel is one of my favorite channels and this sums up perfectly how I (and I hope you) feel about our Earth!  Fantastic!

Earth Day 2008

HAPPY EARTH DAY 2008!

Here are some great websites that will educate, motivate and allow you to DONATE for great causes to support our wonderful Earth.  We only have her once.

Nature Conservancy – Plant A Billion Trees campaign.  Donate $1/1 tree to be planted in the Brazillian rainforest.

EarthDay.gov – The US government’s website on Earth Day 2008.  Facts, figures, stats and general education to Americans to make this year’s Earth Day the best ever.

EarthDay.net – Great site for resources, tips, tricks and education on conservation.

TerraPass.com – A great calculator for finding out what your carbon emissions total and the price to offset that cost to the world.  Check this site out!

Earth Day 2008: A Moxie Series (pt 2)

As part of dedicating my blog towards Earth Day 2008, I wanted to find an organization that would help me make a difference to this world.  I found the perfect one!  The Nature Conservancy is doing a campaign called “Plant a Billion Trees: one dollar, one tree, one planet.”  It’s a fantastic cause!

For every $1.00 you donate ($10.00 minimum), the Nature Conservancy will plant one tree in your name in the rain forests of Brazil.  It is SO easy to donate… so please, take the time to read their campaign and donate just $10.00 for 10 trees to be planted in your name (you can definitely donate more than $10.00 if you want)!

The Earth On My Desktop!?

Jeff's Desktop Image

So I was watching Tekzilla’s latest podcast last night and the host, Patrick Norton, brought up a website that immediately caught my interest. Anyone who knows me knows that I am a weather geek and LOVE satellite pictures, radar pictures, etc.

So with that said, I want to share with you a new application I just purchased. EarthDesk is a real time desktop application that shows the earth in real-time. As the creator of EarthDesk states, “EarthDesk replaces your Macintosh desktop picture or Windows wallpaper with a stunning dynamic image of our planet continuously updating in the background while you work.”

What this includes is real-time satellite pictures of the earth in all of its glory. You can see where the moon is currently shining, where there’s daylight and you can have it update within one minute so you can track the sun’s rays (in real satellite images) as it goes across the horizon. It’s simply amazing.

There are a lot of other really cool settings with this application, but you can read all of them at the company’s website which is here.
