Is Oprah the Devil?

I tend to not write about religious things because, to be honest, I don’t find it moxie. However, I feel compelled to discuss this latest craziness. As many of you know (my “A New Earth” post is one of the most visited), Oprah chose a book for her book club that is stirring up a lot of controversy. She also is conducting (with the author Eckhart Tolle) an 8-week webclass that has hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of students participating in this book’s study.
I was recently told to “be careful” since I was a student in this class and reading the book. Why? Well, it seems a few organizations, media outlets and churches are condeming Oprah for “sponsoring” this book. They’re claiming A New Earth is New-Age, un-Christian, full of lies and deceit and that Oprah is (and I quote) “the Anti-Christ… lying to millions of her followers so they will drop Christianity out of their own, confused lives.”
Really? Wow. That’s a strong statement. So naturally, I did some digging and found a few interesting points. The most watched “anti-Oprah” on YouTube regarding this book and her title as “Anti-Christ” is sponsored by some guy named Islm13. It has over 5 million views. This guy’s video was produced by a church claiming that all Christians need to unite against Oprah and Eckhart Tolle and to not be fooled by this “new-age”, “evil” book. The interesting thing about his videos… they don’t slam Oprah just on the book. They then make it political and say “she’s also supported Obama as President, which we all know is an evil Muslim who is destined to destroy America…“ REALLY? Well, that right there told me that this is definitely politically-motivated… and when you get politics involved, truth and reality seem to be thrown out like garbage.
I searched all of the webcasts (again I’m a student taking this class every Monday night) and I found an interesting clip, from the mouth of Oprah herself (gasp!!! Who would have thought to actually ask the source???)
Here it is… you decide. Do you think Oprah is giving up her Christianity? I sure don’t. She states that her belief in God and Jesus are NOT JUST defined by the scriptures. She doesn’t put God in a box.

This is the whole point of the book. How the ego in others strikes and condems. If we want truth it is there, and Oprah is wanting and offering it to us all who seek. I have lived as a condemer and a fighter. so now I choose to learn and accept and see what is real. you either want truth or you want it to be what you want it to be. so in a nutshell all of us are learnign from eachother, no matter what happens

I haven't read the book and probably won't. I'm not that touchy feely. Still, calling someone anti-Christian (heck.. the ANTI-CHRIST!) because she read a book that disagrees with some folks world view is anti-American in my opinion. Folks just need to relax, live and let live, and well.. SHUSH sometimes. OK.. rant off. Good post, BTW.

It seems like a new "evil book" arrives with every train pulling into the station. And it's often the same people (or at least people who SOUND remarkably similar) who find a new Anti-Christ hiding behind every tree. Who knew there were so many? Here's a novel idea: Let's trust our own intellects to be able to separate the wheat from the chaff (and the Anti-Christ).

Wow, anti-christ, huh? I doubt it. That sure does give her a lot of power though, if masses are frightened enough to give you the most feared name they can imagine. Btw, love the work Moxie too! Best book of quotes I've ever found was called simply, Moxie.

god in a box?? oprah is spreading lies , if its not from the gospel its not from god, she is going against christianity , she thinks she can say what she likes , she is dangerous and people listen to her!!!! i saw her comment on hearing a preacher read from exodus 20 about god being jealous and vengeful oprah decided in her wisdom!! that god must be jealous of her!! what a joke , she misinterprets scripture ! and thinks of herself so highly that she takes it to mean god is jealous of her! pauls letter to the phillpians tells us not to be full of self importance and vain conceit yet she does both of these, this woman is no christian, she is all about her own image and her own good works, thinking that will bring her salvation, the only way to that is through a relationship with jesus christ!!! there is no box to put god in or out of!! just the truth!!! the truth isnt always easy but we dont have the right to twist the truth to suit us and still call ourselves christians …..faith is what we have in god and we should trust him to know best!! and hes told us how to do that …its all in the bible!

Lesley - I mean this when I say it… I'm praying for you. You have a lot of hate and bitterness and judgment in your heart and I know God… I know He doesn't exist in those types of feelings. So I hope you can release them and let Jesus open your heart so that you don't feel the need to hate and judge. You're no "better" than the next sinner. With love, Jeff

Hey. Actually, Lesley is right on about Oprah’s misinterpretation, but I don’t agree with judging Oprah’s faith. I will say this: Oprah’s comments do not reflect those of a humble, God-seeking believer. God is jealous of the various things we give our time and attention to in substitute of Himself (i.e. anything God would not want us to spend time doing…including seeking New Age explanations for Him that fall outside the boundaries of scripture). It sounds like Oprah means well, but she IS deceiving many in my opinion because she is not qualified to lead in this matter.

I see these post and I see both sides of the story. What scares me about Oprah is that she treads lightly on alot of subjects. She is trying to be a friend to everyone. And when someone is friend to everyone, she is friend to no one. She seems to have unseen motives going on behind the scenes. Like the case were she is being sued by the south african woman for defermation of character. It fine if people want to listen to Oprah and what she believes, but I would just warn to make yourself educated on those subjects and decide for yourself.

Jeff,
If you truly study the bible what lesley says is true. No, I do not think Oprah is the devil, but she is not practicing Christianity.
Does Jesus love Oprah, yes, however that does not mean she is not misleading people. If you are a Christian, there is a guide, it is called the bible, and it teaches that Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father. It is quite clear, not Buddah, not Muhammed and not by your own good works or by you tapping into the energy flow of the universe. All other beliefs are false, and therefore misleading. Thank Christ for giving us mercy and compassion and not what thoughts we send out to the universe.

BC,
I’d be interested in knowing where you get scripture that states your point? I agree with you regarding Jesus as being the way to salvation, yet if you read the book (assuming you have not) and have watched Oprah, she feels the same way as well. Spirituality is not defined by your religious beliefs; rather it’s defined as a closeness to your creator and to the Supreme Being (aka God). Appreciate your comments, though!
