Hello Macbook! I’m In Love!

So I bought myself a new laptop on the very last day of 2007… and I switched. I got me a brand new Macbook and I love it. There have been countless blog articles about the benefits of switching to a Mac so I’m not going to bore you with those details.
Instead I’d like to just talk about some of the immediate changes I’ve noticed since switching over to a Mac. I’d love for you to leave a comment if you agree, disagree or even had some advice on this topic.
First and foremost, the physical appearance of this laptop is to die for. It literally is fantastic. From the beautiful white plastic (yes, I like the white color) to the way the keys feel under my finger tips, the Apple Macbook has got it right. The other initial “Ah-ha! moment” that I had was the setup of Apple’s Leopard OS. I literally set up my new Macbook in UNDER 10 minutes. Keep in mind not only did I create a user account, add .Mac to my laptop (a year subscription of great web services), add my wireless network to my laptop (it configured it on its own, ps)… I also was able to do a preliminary customization of my desktop all in those first 10 minutes. I was in awe. I don’t recall Windows ever being so user friendly and so quick.
Beyond the obvious differences (a boot time of literally seconds, the graphics kicking my IBM Lenovo laptop’s butt, the look and feel of Leopard, etc), there were also some unexpected events that I was happy to encounter. If you’ve been used to a PC like I am (my entire life practically) you’ll understand the initial fear one has when switching over to the Mac OS. But I assure you, it really wasn’t bad! I picked up on the keyboard shortcuts, commands, etc. pretty quickly if I do say so myself. So, if you’re like me (which I think a lot of you are) do not let the fear of learning a completely different OS scare you from buying a Mac. IT IS WORTH IT.
I will say that I learned so much prior to purchasing my new Macbook thanks to articles like Mike K’s “What Every Switcher Should Know“. Everything he details in his wonderfully written article are things that I am so thankful I read ahead of time (particularly in how Macs install applications versus how PCs do).
Happy Mac’ing!!

I recently made the switch as well and am hooked on Mac for all the same reasons. I love the quick start up, the way it picks up the wireless options so easily, the unbelievable screen colours, etc. Great post. I’m never going back to PC.

Why wait until after MacWorld? Yeah, something new might be released, but that won’t take anything away from his experience. His machine won’t suddenly run slower or be less capable on the 15th. Plus, if Apple still has MacBooks in the channel on 12/31, it’s highly doubtful that it would be revving on 1/15.

This was a great post… The MacBook was our first toe in the Mac pond, hitting the water in spring of ‘06. Felt exactly the same way about the thing… just perfect. Bought myself a MacBook Pro about a year later and gave the white MacBook to the wife. We just put the final nail in the PC coffin by dumping an old Dell desktop in favor of an iMac, which is similarly amazing. Posted a little love note to Steve Jobs and Apple on my blog:

I recently switched (Oct. 2007) as well. I had an Apple IIc as my first computer and then had various pc notebooks from there on out. I had forgotten how elegant everything is on a Mac. I did get the Macbook Pro and am running parallels because I still have a windows mobile phone (waiting for at least gen 3 of the iPhone) and need to sync that with the pc side.
I picked up the commands pretty quickly as well and find myself doing mac commands on my work laptop (PC) as if those are the ones I’ve been doing all this time and not the other way around!!
Owning a mac to sync my iPod is more fun too!! I can’t wait for my iPhone!!
Thanks for the link too!

I switched to mac last month. Basically, I have the same reasons as you. I am a PC programmer. This is my daily job. But, personally, I tried of same old windows interface. That’s why I want to try something new. I bought a new imac. I am happy about it.
Basically, when you switch to mac you don’t give up anything. Apple used intel cpu for their new macs. You can still install Windows if you want. You actually didn’t give up anything. You can have the goodness of the both world. Second, most common application found in PC, you can find it for Mac as well. Lastly, the price of new macs are affordable, you can get a mac mini in $500, and macbook and iMac in $1100.. which actually it is cheaper and more valuable than some of the Dell pcs such as Dell XPS One.
I think Mac is changing alot, it is no longer a useless Macintosh anymore.

I a a longtime Mac user, I have stopped trying to get people to switch. It’s better if they discover it for themselves. Welcome aboard.

I’m still in shock how many visits I get on this particular post… and after 3 months of using my Macbook daily… I am still happier with it than I’ve ever been.
Apple definitely reeled me in…. I now have Apple TV, an Apple Extreme Base Station (wireless router 802.11n), a new iPod Touch for my bf, and more apple equipment that the novice blogger does NOT need.
