Getting Woopra Installed on Your Mac

Woopra

For weeks now, I’ve been wishing and hoping I could find a way to get the Woopra desktop client installed on my Macbook. As most of you know, you have to have version 1.6 Java Virtual Machine to run Woopra. Well, last night, I figured it out!

For those who don’t know what Woopra is, feel free to click here to learn more.

While I was researching other websites that explained how to install Woopra on a Mac, everything that I was reading was still not allowing it to work on mine. I then came across a wonderful website that provided an additional step and voila: it works!

From my understanding, this only works on Intel Macs running Tiger or Leopard!!!

Please feel free to add a comment or email me if these instructions do not make sense.

(1) Download the Woopra Desktop Client here. Once you’ve downloaded it, COPY THE INSTALL IMAGE TO YOUR DESKTOP (in other words, copy the .dmg file to your computer). After you’ve copied this to your desktop, right-click your mouse on the Woopra Install image. You will then click on “Show Package Contents”. Open the file under the contents folder titled Info.plist. In your text-editor, you will need to change the following:

Under the line <key>JVMVersion</key> change “<string>1.3+</string>” to “<string>1.6+</string>” (w/o the parenthesis)

Once you’ve changed this key, save the Info.plist and you’re done with that (for now). DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL WOOPRA JUST YET. THERE’S MORE TO DO.

(2) As of yesterday, you can download the correct Java version directly from Apple – it’s super easy. Go here to download the file. (I was just informed of this today, after I already installed Woopra. I guess Apple just released the version of Java that we’ve been needing for Woopra yesterday.)

(4) Install the new Java software. After you install, though, there’s one more step (this is where I kept getting caught up). You have to tell your Mac to begin using this version of Java rather than the other, previously installed versions of Java OR Woopra will not install correctly and you’ll get errors. To do this, on your Mac, go to Applications->Utilities->Java->Java Preferences.

(5) On the General tab, under Java Applet Runtime Settings, select “Java SE 6″. You will then re-arrange the list of Java versions so that Java SE 6 is the top item. Click Save. I PERSONALLY REBOOTED MY MACBOOK BEFORE I COMPLETED STEP #6!!!

(6) Now, you should be able to install Woopra on your Mac. It worked just fine for me! I’d love to hear your comments and let me know if this helped you!

Woopra is amazing! I've been trying for a few weeks now to install Woopra and I've been trying a bunch of different solutions, none of which were working. There was the possibility of booting up an old Dell to do the job but that would have been a pain. These instructions worked really well. I just realized that the link for the direct download from Apple is now dead, though. I downloaded the latest update yesterday from a link in a TUAW post and that's dead too. All I get is a not found message from Apple. Does anyone know of an alternate way to download it because it looks like the old link has been removed? Great post, Jeff! You should do more tech help stuff.

Just got woopra installed. Finally. Waited forever to get accepted into the beta program, only to not be able to install it on my mac. These instructions worked like a charm. I noticed the java update appeared in the Mac's software update today. As far as finding the actual package on apple's site. You're right, all the links on the internet are broken. Though I was able to simply search apple's site for Java SE 6. Here's the current link as of this post: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/appli...

I can't get this to work! I'm running 10.4.11 but I can't install the Java file. Help?

  5. Ross Says:

As I said to you on Twitter. Thanks a ton for this post. I would have been spinning my wheels for hours trying to figure this out. Woopra is amazing. Only mistake I made was forgetting to put Java 6 on the top of the list in prefs. This is a must!

Woopra is great! Thank you a lot, Jeff! The errors that I were getting was because Java SE 6 is on top for Application Runtime, or it does not work.

    Thanks Neal! Appreciate it!

  10. Jeff McCord Says:

Hmmm, I'm assuming you will need to have 10.5.1 per Woopra's requirement. Sorry Karen!

  11. Jeff McCord Says:

That was my mistake too, Ross! Thanks for the comment.

Hey there – thanks! I'm glad it's working for almost everyone. The Woopra Wordpress plugin works for me? What is it saying for yours?

  19. brainpicker Says:

Oddly enough, nothing: it just sits there with only the setup options (website ID, track admin area checkbox, auto tagging checkbox, "update" button) — no actual data. Although I'm not sure it's actually supposed to display data on my Wordpress dashboard…any idea? Either way, the desktop one works great, so thanks again — and let me know if there's something else to be done on the WordPress one.

  32. Dave Peterson Says:

Jeff, thanks to you, I've finally got the Woopra Desktop app running. Very good directions; there was just one point where my computer didn't match your directions. On a right-click on the .dmg, I didn't get an option for "Show Package Contents". This may well be configuration issue on my machine, since no one else ran into this. I was able to just directly edit the .dmg file using TextEdit, which worked fine. Thanks again!

Hi thanks for your help, but I am unable to save my text edit file, it says that file does not exist when I try to save. Any advice?

  37. Jeff McCord Says:

Jabiz, I have no idea why you're getting that error. The only thing I can think of is are you sure you're moving the Woopra install (.dmg file) TO YOUR DESKTOP?

  38. Connor P Says:

I had this problem too, its a permissions error. Mount the .dmg file from your desktop, then move the .app file it contains to the desktop. Then once the .app file is on the desktop, Go Show Package Contents from there. .dmg files have strange permissions. Hope this helps, it worked for me.

  39. Arno Smit Says:

Will it work on MacBooks that ARE NOT 64bit? I couldn’t get the java to install on my Macbook, when I tried it a few months ago, because it’s not a 64bit intel Macbook. Does this get around that?

  49. Brian Says:

You da man! Thanks. I am not that much of a techie, but had no problem with your instructions. Thanks for the good service. Sleep well!

    Cindy,

You still need to be approved by Woopra and have your site added… to do that, you will need to go to http://www.woopra.com and go from there.

    Thanks for adding a comment!

  53. Jeff McCord Says:

    Cindy,

Sounds like you didn’t add the Woopra javascript code to your blog. Woopra has “how-to’s” on all of that, that’s not my expertise, sorry. If you have a Wordpress blog like I do, you simply just install the Woopra Plugin.

  54. cindy Says:

    hi jeff
thanks for your message and suggestions

sorry I am new to all this and

no , we don’ tave a blog on our site but
assuming we can add this Woopra javascript code on just our normal web pages
does one add it to all pages on the website or does woopra work only if you have a blog??

thanks for all your help and advice
    much appreciated

    cindy

  55. Jeff McCord Says:

    Cindy -

You just need a website and you need to read Woopra’s instructions… it tells you where to add the javascript code (I believe it’s just on the index.php/index.html file) and then it will work once you’re approved. Again, go to Woopra’s website (www.woopra.com) and you should be able to get your answers there.
