Why are hundreds of thousands of people paying $10.00 for a gift they’ve never seen? A few weeks ago, I wrote a guest blog article on Culture Feast and I explained how a new business website is getting all the “web 2.0″ press as of late. Basically you pay $10.00 to this company (SomethingStore.com) and they will ship you a gift within one to two weeks. The catch? You have no idea what this gift will be! It can be a gadget, an iPod or a $10 paperclip. Others have reported getting dolls and even clothes that were tres chic!

SomethingStore.com has risen to new heights in terms of companies playing in the social networking arena because what they offer to consumers is something so kindergarten “Americonic.” You pay for a toy and the toy comes to you in one to two weeks. Once you get this surprise, you then message it to everyone on your network and so on and so forth. It’s a brilliant idea, it’s a simple idea and it ties into social networking very easily.

I got my package yesterday. It took two weeks but I got an email with in the first 4 business days of my transaction stating their apologies and how the press has given them lots of exposure and therefore they’re trying to keep up with demand.

I can’t say I’m thrilled with my gift from SomethingStore.com, but I can say I’ll use it, it came in great condition and it was fun.

So any die-hard Appleholic knows that next week is a big week. Why? Apple has their annual WWDC meeting where Steve Jobs will announce Apple’s new products/plans/updates. I must admit, I feel like Christmas is on Monday (when Steve Jobs takes the stage). This is a big deal for all of us who love Apple. Thanks to some of the insider blogs (Engadget, Gizmodo, TUAW), here are the rumors of what’s to occur next week. Will they be right?

(1) iPhone 3G – according to many insiders, Apple will announce their 2.0 iPhone which is rumored to have GPS, 3G capability and several more features. Read more here.

(2) iPhone Applications (iPhone SDK) – for the rest of us who already have an iPhone and don’t plan on shelling out another rent payment to get a new one just yet, the iPhone SDK (Software Development Kit) is supposed to be announced. Some sites report that we will be able to purchase 3rd party applications from iTunes as early as Monday.

(3) Snow Leopard (10.6) – Several sites are reporting that Leopard 10.6 will be announced (otherwise known as Snow Leopard) which will improve speed and security for Mac’s successful Leopard operating system. Click here to read more about that.

Needless to say, next Monday will be an exciting day as will the rest of the week when the world will see what Apple is going to announce. I don’t know about you, but I’m waiting on pins and needles!

Which rumors do you think will come true? What else have you heard that Apple will announce? Leave your comments below!

Google recently announced a new service that will motivate any website owner into getting more involved in the social media realm. Google Friend Connect was made to socialize the internet for every-day users. Users will be able to add profile information, videos, photos and other great “widgets” on any website that uses their service. Even better, the website owner doesn’t even need to know programming since Google will have a wizard type set up to install this new service on to any website.

Why is this a big deal? In my opinion, this opens the playing field for the average blog site and even though we will never be competing directly with the MySpaces and Facebooks of the world, it at least gives us the chance to provide social networking and the fun that goes with it to our viewers.

According to e-Week, “the key to Friend Connect is ease of use. Google has built a wizard-like page where a Webmaster can enter the name of his or her site, choose applications from a Google application gallery, and cut and paste pieces of code right into the site.”

Once Google Friend Connect is launched to the masses, there will be more and more widgets available that will allow you, the viewer, to bring your friends with you on any website you want. Social networking will definitely be altered once this service launches, in my opinion.

What are your thoughts? If you own a blog/website, do you have interest in using this service? If so, why? Please leave a comment below!
